During that period I accompanied the Mission as far as Nanking, where I suffered much sickness, from which I entirely recovered.
In September 1844, I was appointed Chief Clerk in the Police Court Victoria Hong Kong, where I remained until the 5th of September 1846, when I joined the Colonial Treasury on the same salary as I received in the Magistracy, hoping there to meet with quicker promotion.
During the years 1845 and 1847, I suffered severely from ill health, and was repeatedly recommended by the Colonial Surgeon of Hong Kong to apply for leave of absence from that Colony, and to take a long sea voyage, but having received...
